Once declared the best university in East Africa back in 2013, University of Dar es Salaam was the fourth best in Africa. Recent times have however seen its decline to its current rankings as per January 2018 according to Webometrics. UDSM is ranked 32nd in the Continent and 2021st in the world.
Still the leading university in the country, Muhimbili University comes second at 56th position in Africa and 2520th in the world. These are the only two universities in Africa’s Top 100 universities.
The best university in Africa is University of Cape Town with a ranked 290th in the world.
In East Africa, University of Nairobi is the best ranked 7th in Africa and 874th in the world. Makerere University comes second in the 11th position in Africa and 1113th in the world. Egerton University in Kenya comes in third position at 23rd and 1686 in the world, Kenyatta University;fourth in EA, 24th in Africa and 1707 in the world. Moi University comes in fifth place at 28th in Africa and 1855th in the world.
Then comes UDSM in 6th position, 32nd in Africa and 2021st in the world. Mbarara University in Uganda 7th, Muhimbili University 8th, Jomo Kenyatta University 9th which completes the top universities in East Africa in the top 100.
Maseno University from Kenya is 10th in East Africa at 122nd position in Africa.
