“SPIRAL OF SILENCE” THE VIRU S THAT AFFECTS OUR MEDIA AND SOCIETY IN TANZAIA.

By Buliba Magambo.

Currently there have been a lot of insidences in our country which directly or indirectly have impacts in our society.

Unfortunately the way these insidences are perseved and discussed, solutions will not be attained.

The issue of unknown people(watu wasiojulikana), killings of Kibiti and threats to diminishing of Democracy, needs more investigation which will come out  with clear answers.

Absence of this way of finding solutions, takes me back in class where I learnt the Theories of Mass Communication which try to explain how Mass Media work and their effects to the society.

One of the theory I learnt is ‘Spiral Of Silence ‘ which was found by  Elizabeth Noelle- Neumann in 1984.

The theory tries to explain why people cancel their opinions, views and preferences when they fall within minarority group.

People do not give their contrary opinions only to avoid being isolated, seem to be traitor even to avoid being tortured by superior group.

Even media play the role in promoting this theory by reporting and explain things which in one way or another please the dominant groups.Media which try to go against other media in finding deep truths, they encounter with a lot of negative response even being burnt by government.

Fear of media to fall into group of positive opposer has led to the decrease of morden media roles which is watchdog role ( media as the voice of minority and is there to check and balance the ruling class).

For our media to maintain their status, they have to denie practicing this theory by not only reporting what happens but also to go deep in analyzing what is behind it.

For example few days a go the government prohibited and insisted Parents not to pay any contribution of school programmes due to the Free Education Policy. The policy is quiet good if will be guided by good plans and strategies.

The question is,has any media made an investigation to know how much amount of money are provided to every school? That amount are provided on time?, The amount satisfies the number of students in every school? What about schools which have no enough number of teachers especially of science subjects? How about teachers environments and motivations?

And if amount of capitation are enough why teachers are still telling parents to contribute?

All of these questions need more clarifications, but our media are quiet as if there is no need of answers to these questions. They are quiet only because of fear of being termed as seditious media.

Is the time for our media to stand for the public interest. Our Societies also have to raise their voice in asking critical questions to each and everything in our societies which affects the public interests.

Also we have to give constructive opinions and criticism which will help our leaders to improve their way of doing their responsibilities not only criticize without giving alternative way.

Our Society will develop through our good relation and efforts.
